kakoi
KEY WORD : architecture / tea houses

Lit. enclosure. An old name for a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. Originally there was no small room *koma 小間, in which to perform the tea ceremony. Therefore, by enclosing part of a large room with moveable screens *byoubu 屏風 an intimate space was created. Thus, referring to a tea ceremony room as kakoi in all probability derived from this custom.
