ishi-no-hikae 石の控え

The depth of a stone in a stone wall *ishigaki 石垣. This is the measurement from the face of the stone visible at the wall surface to the end of the stone 'inside' the wall. When the depth of a stone is twice the surface width, it is termed jou 上; when it is 1.5 times the surface it is called chuu 中, and when the surface and length are the same it is called ge 下.
