hozoana ほぞ穴

A mortise. A cavity hewn from a timber or stone member or cut in metal to receive a tenon *hozo ほぞ. The mortise is often referred to as the female member *megi 女木. The use of tenons and mortises are of primary importance in Japanese joinery.
