hanahiragawara 端平瓦
KEY WORD : architecture / roofing tiles

A broad, concave end tile that alternates with an eave end semi-circular tile surmounted with a circular pendant *gatou 瓦当. The same as *nokihiragawara 軒平瓦 or *hira karakusagawara 平唐草瓦. The former term is more often used by scholars and the latter by tile makers and setters. Hanahiragawara is a logical term for the broad, concave eave-end pendant tile because it literally means edge flat title. Also called hashihiragawara.
