gedai 外題

Also hyoudai 表題. The title daimoku 題目 of a literary work or painting. It is written on the outer cover of a handscroll *kansubon 巻子本, hanging scroll *kakemono 掛物, or book *sasshibon 冊子本. Gedai are written either directly on the cover or on a slip of paper pasted to the cover. This term is used in contrast to naidai 内題, a title written inside the cover, or on the title page in the case of a book.
