A pictorial work or works that appear within a painting as part of the overall composition. The best example being the *shiki-e 四季絵 (landscapes of the four seasons) painted on screens in the Illustrated Handscroll of The Tale of Genji Genji monogatari emaki 源氏物語絵巻 (early 12c). Another example can be found in the Illustrated Handscroll of The Miraculous Stories of the God of Kasuga Shrine Kasuga Gongen ｋenki emaki 春日権現験起絵巻 by Takashina Takakane 高階隆兼 (1309; Imperial Collection).
