Also read fundame. A technique of coating a statue with gold. Used during and after the Kamakura period. The figure was painted with a layer of lacquer or animal glue *nikawa 膠 and gold dust was sprinkled on the surface. The effect was less shiny than gold leaf *shippaku 漆箔. Often fundami was used by itself on a statue's body, and combined with cut gold *kirikane 切金 on drapery.
