Lit. hanging branches. 1　A sheathing made of boards and bamboo woven into a basket-weave pattern and used as a base for thatched roofing using a coarse tall grass called cogon grass (miscanthus) or ditch reed. For ordinary vernacular dwellings *minka 民家 about 1.8m long, thin bamboo, boards or ditch reeds are woven with rope to make a base for thatched roofs. The WAKAN SANSAIZUE 和漢三才図絵 (1713) states that it was also a base used for pantile *sangawarabuki 桟瓦葺 in the Edo period. 2　Timber placed on top of rafters to create a base for tile roofing. 3　Laths set against the posts of store-houses to make a surface for mud plaster walls.
