berorin-ai　ベロリン藍

Also bero-ai ベロ藍. Prussian blue or Berlin blue. A synthetic blue paint made from ferric ferrocyanide, imported to Japan from Holland. Used in Japanese painting from the late 18c, and in wood-block prints *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 from the 1820s. The use of Berlin blue by Katsushika Hokusai 葛飾北斎 (1760-1849) sparked a vogue for blue colors in ukiyo-e prints of the late 1820s and 1830s. Berorin-ai has a much brighter color than indigo *ai 藍.
