yosemune-zukuri 寄棟造
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

Also called *shia 四阿 in the Nara period. Also komune-zukuri 小棟造, shichuu-zukuri 四注造; yotsuya 四つ屋; yotsuyane-zukuri 四つ屋根造 in northern Japan. A square or rectangular building, covered with a hipped roof *yosemune yane 寄棟屋根. The roof descends from the ridge *munagi 棟木, in four directions: the front and back are trapezoidal in shape, and the ends are triangular. Hence there are four corner descending ridges. The hipped roof was thought to mark a building of less importance than a gabled roof *kirizuma yane 切妻屋根. In China, it was used for the most prestigious buildings, unlike Japan which preferred the hip-and-gable roof *irimoya yane 入母屋屋根, for its most important buildings. Yosemune-zukuri is used for vernacular dwellings *minka 民家, as well as for temples or shirines. Roofing materials include tiles, shingles, thatch, copper sheeting etc.
