The largest sized roof tile used to connect the turret corridors *watariyagura “n˜E of castles. They are pantiles *sangawara ŽVŠ¢ and measure about 30cm long and 37cm wide. Medium sized roof tiles, hiromamono LŠÔ•¨ were used for palaces or mansions. The smallest sized tiles, nagayamono ’·‰®•¨, were used to roof ordinary dwellings. Collectively they are called yanegarawa ‰®ªŠ¢. These expressions were widely used from the 17c-19c and continue to be used to some extent today, especially nagayamono.
