yuoke-ishi　湯桶石

Also called yutouseki, katakuchi-ishi 片口石, yuage-ishi 湯揚げ石 and oke-ishi 桶石. Lit. warm water pail stone. One of the *yaku-ishi 役石 of the *tsukubai 蹲踞 set of stones in tea garden *roji 露地. The yuoke-ishi is placed to the user's right of the *chouzubachi 手水鉢, across from the *teshoku-ishi 手燭石. It is a flat stone which derived its name from winter tea gatherings when the chouzubachi was emptied (for fear that ice could crack it) and a bucket of warm water was placed on the stone so that the guests could use the water to rinse their hands.
