Carmine, a crimson pigment. An alkaline organometallic compound, taken from the female cochineal insect which lives on desert cactus in central America. Processed and used in powdered form as a red paint. First imported to Japan in the late Edo period. Youkou is a very strong pigment, resistant to fading.
