yokoya masugata 横矢桝形

Also termed demasugata 出桝形. A defensive box shaped courtyard *masugata 桝形 that projects out from a wall or embankment at the corner of a castle. Fitted with loopholes for archers and later with portholes for sharp shooters with guns. Used to defend proximate walls and embankment by firing on the enemy from the side, and also to attack troops located on the other side of the moat.
