yokobori　横堀

A lateral dry moat excavated crosswise in front of a mountain castle *yamajiro 山城 in an area with a gentle slope. It is built to stop the advance of enemy forces. The term is contrasted with *tatebori 竪堀; a moat running down the mountain slope in front of a castle.
