Lit. divided worship hall. A long structure under a single roof divided in the center by a passageway *medou ”n“Ή, that traditionally has an earthen floor, *doma “yŠΤ. Documents from the Muromachi period describe a worship hall which is composed of an east hall higashihaiden “Œ”q“a , a central gate *chuumon ’†–ε, and a west hall nishihaiden Ό”q“a. An excellent example and the oldest extant can be found at Isonokami Jinguu Sessha Izumo Takeo Jinja Ξγ_‹{ΫŽΠo‰_Œš—Y_ŽΠ in Nara. Undulating gables *karahafu “‚”j•—, are placed at the openings of the passageway, giving the appearance of a gate with wings on each side. The buildings date from the early Kamakura period but the undulating gables appear to have been added at a later date.
