uwaki 上木

Also pronounced uwagi.

1 The uppermost timber of two joined structural elements. Often referred to as the male timber.

2 In landscape gardening, instead of uwagi, the characters are read jouboku. The term refer to one main tree or a main group of trees. Their branches are high and foliage is dense to form a backdrop for other garden scenery. The middle part of this group is called nakagi 中木 and the low shrubbery in front is called *shitaki 下木.
