umi-ishi 海石
KEY WORD : architecture / gardens

Lit. sea stone. A generic name for stones found in the ocean or along the seashore. Because sea stones contain salt, and sometimes even embedded shells, they often do not harmonize with other garden stones and do not grow moss. Unlike mountain stones *yama-ishi 山石, sea stones are rarely used in gardens.
