Lit. waterfall stone arrangement. A type of stone arrangement used for garden waterfalls. Also pronounced taki-iwagumi ‘êΑg, the stones may form the foundation of a real waterfall *shoutoku-no-taki ¶“¾‚Ì‘ê or may symbolize a dry waterfall *karetaki ŒÍ‘ê. Basic types of taikigumi-ishi include the dragon's gate cascade *ryuumonbaku —³–åàe, cloth cascade style bakufushiki àe•zŽ® ; one-step fall ichidan-ochi ˆê’i—Ž, two-step fall nidan-ochi “ñ’i—Ž, three-step fall sandan-ochi ŽO’i—Ž and cloth falls nuno-ochi •z—Ž. The most commonly used stones in takigumi-ishi are: mizuochi-ishi …—ŽÎ, used at the top of the waterfall; takizoe-ishi ‘ê“YÎ, placed near the mizuochi-ishi ; and taki chuushinseki ‘ê’†SÎ, a large, standing stone placed by the takizoe-ishi; and mizuwake-ishi …•ªÎ, placed at the bottom of the fall to divide the water into two streams.
