tsubosama 坪狭間

Also written 壷狭間. Large bamboo stalks that are cut in section, painted and placed in outer castle walls and in the walls of castle buildings. In peace time the bamboo sections are filled up with earth, but during wartime, the earth is removed and the hollow openings are utilized as loopholes through which to shoot arrows or guns.
