touseikabuto　当世兜

Also written 当世冑. Contemporary helmet. A type of Japanese helmet based on southern barbarian *nanban 南蛮 styles along with other armor tousei gusoku 当世具足 in the late Muromachi period. Types include: nari 形 (figured) kabuto in such shapes as peach, chinquapin and trumpet shell; harikake 張懸 (papier-meche attached) kabuto in such shapes as catfish tail, goushi 合子 (small lidded container), Mt. Fuji 富士 and Ichinotani 一ノ谷 slope; and practical ones like hinenozu-nari 日根野頭形 and etchuuzu-nari 越中頭形. To meet the decorative challenge of touseikabuto, more stars were added to the traditional hoshi 星 (star) helmet popular from the late Heian to Nanbokuchou periods, and suji 筋 (lined) helmet popular from the Nanbokuchou to the Muromachi periods. By the mid Edo period, unconventional styles like harikake kabuto declined in quality.
