1 Abbreviation for an alcove *tokonoma 床の間. There are many types to toko.
2 In ancient periods it was an abbreviation for a bed called nedoko 寝床.
3 During the Kamakura period, it was a boarded floor with woven straw mats.
4 In the Muromachi period, it was a room with a raised floor section.
5 Also a term for the flooring on which thick straw mats *tatami 畳 are placed.
