1@ A generic term for the vertical muntins on lattice *koushi ŠiŽq, found on sliding translucent paper screens *shouji αŽq. Vertical muntins on fences are also called kakiko Š_Žq, and are frequently made of bamboo. Whole bamboo muntins are used in a grid shape for *yotsumegaki Žl–ΪŠ_, and kinkakujigaki ‹ΰŠtŽ›Š_, while split bamboo muntins are used for *kenninjigaki ŒšmŽ›Š_. Other vegetation is sometimes gathered into bundles and used as muntins. Examples include spice bush which is used for *uguisugaki ‰§Š_ and bush wood which is used for *shibagaki ŽΔŠ_.

2@Lit. standing members. The longitudinal or upright slats of a fence. These vertical members are usually tied to horizontal bars *oshibuchi ‰Ÿ‰ with cord. In some cases they are affixed to a bottom sill, either with nails or on a sill, and to the top bars *tamabuchi ‹Κ‰. Bamboo is the favorite material, but other types of light wood may be employed.
