Ch: Zhu Geliang (181-234). Also known as Kongming (Jp: Koumei E–Ύ). A counsellor to the Chinese Han emperor Liu Bei (Jp: Ryuu Bi —«”υ). He is said to have lived alone on Sleeping Dragon mountain. Liu and two companions visited Zhu on a snowy night in the year 207 only to find the reclusive scholar, living in a reed hut, reading diligently (or sleeping, according to some versions) despite the winter chill. Zhu Geliang eventually accepted Liubei's offer to serve the court and once established was famous for his loyalty and clever military tactics. Many stories surround his military strategies and magical powers. The story of Liubei's visit to Zhu's thatched house is described in the popular tale Record of The Three Kingdoms (Ch: Sanguozhi, Jp :SANGOKUSHI ŽO‘Žu). Supposedly while Liubei waited patiently for the recalcitrant Zhu, his friend Zhang Fei (Jp: Chou Hi ’£”ς) grew angry but was restrained by Guan Yu (Jp: *Kan U ŠΦ‰H). The theme was popular in Ming dynasty painting and was illustrated in Japan both in Edo printed books and by artists such as Soga Shouhaku ‘\‰δεJ”’ (1730-81).
