shirakizou 白木像

Also kijizou 素地像. A wooden statue with a natural wood surface. Shirakizou may be a Buddhist or Shintou 神道 image. It is finished without paint or lacquer, except for some colour used on the facial features. A natural wood surface is often found on sandalwood statues (*danzou 檀像) and *natabori 鉈彫 (statues with unsmoothed chisel marks).
