shippei 竹箆

A rod used by a priest to discipline students practising Zen 禅 meditation. Made of split bamboo covered with black lacquer, the rod is usually about 90cm long and curved in a bow shape. One end is bound with cane, and the other end often has a cord with a tassel hanging from it. The shippei is sometimes found as an attribute, *jimotsu 持物, on statues of Zen priests.
