shinzai 心材
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

Heartwood. The deep pith of a tree trunk or limbs. It is dark and sometimes redder than the surrounding sapwood, *henzai 辺材. However, the color differs according to the type of tree. The heartwood of a cedar or pine tree is usually called akami 赤身, (lit. red body or heart). Heartwood does not decay as easily as sapwood. It contains a considerable amount of resin but tends to crack easily.
