seifun 正吻

Also seifun 蚩吻. A decoration in the shape of a fictional animal found at each end of a main roof-ridge *oomune 大棟. Fun 吻 refers to the animal's wide-open mouth. Mainly found in Chinese architecture. A good example in Japan can be seen on Yushima Seidou 湯島聖堂 in Tokyo. Variations called boufun 傍吻 and soujuu そう獣 were used on corner ridges *sumimune 隅棟.
