sumiyagura 隅櫓
KEY WORD : architecture / castles

A corner tower. Also written 角櫓. A timber-framed tower set on the corner of a castle wall where two stone walls jut out. In the Edo period, this three-roofed tower was the most striking castle structure after the keep *tenshu 天守. Indeed the largest such towers have the same form as the keep. For example, Kumamotojou Udoyagura 熊本城宇土櫓, has five stories including a basement, and a connecting tower tsuzukiyagura 続櫓, attached to the first story.
