soudou 僧堂

A large hall at a Zen temple. It was divided into two parts. The front part, called the *gedou 外堂, was used for administrative purposes and for accommodating guest priests. The inner, rear area was called the *naidou 内堂. It was where the priests lived and where they were trained.
