soribashi 反橋

Also pronounced sorihashi. Lit. curved bridge. A general term for an arched bridge. Soribashi include gently curved bridges such as the earthen *dobashi 土橋, the truncated *nozokibashi 覗橋, single and triple trestle bridges, the curved bracket bridge, as well as the fully arched *engetsukyou 円月橋 and *taikobashi 太鼓橋. The soribashi was developed in China and adapted by Japanese garden designers no later than the Heian period.
