shukujiro 宿城

1 Edo period towns used as a stopping place by the Tokugawa 徳川 shoguns when they traveled outside the city of Edo. Because a shogun's entourage was large, it is reported that shukujiro often were entirely occupied by guards and other staff, forcing the inhabitants of the town to move out.

2 A term used by Edo period students of warfare to designate a flatland castle *hirajiro 平城, or castle on a hill or plateau *hirayamajiro 平山城, which was surrounded by a castle town *joukamachi 城下町.
