shoujibori 障子堀

Also termed kakubori 角堀 (a moat with squared off ridges), or unebori 畝堀 (the general term for a furrowed dry moat). A dry moat *karabori 空掘 in which squared off ridges were constructed, horizontally and vertically as in a *shouji 障子 frame, to prevent the enemy from advancing along the bottom. Sometimes palisades were also constructed.
