shikomi-e 仕込絵
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

Paintings produced for general sale rather than upon the specific request of a patron. These works are therefore comparable to the "ready-made" objects produced today by large companies. The artists who produced shikomi-e were not particularly skillful, nor did they take the time or effort to produce quality paintings. Thus, the reputation of these artists and their work is not high. During the Edo period, town-painters *machi-eshi 町絵師, produced many shikomi-e.
