shihoubutsu chouzubachi 四方仏手水鉢

Lit. Buddhas of four directions. A type of water basin made from reused objects *mitatemono chouzubachi 見立物手水鉢, made of the body *toushin 塔身 of multi-stored pagodas *soutou 層塔 or stone pagodas *houkyouintou 宝筺印塔. The oval or square toushin usually has four images of Buddha or Sanskrit characters carved into its sides. Because it is small, the shihoubutsu chouzubachi is often placed on a stone base.
