shidou 祠堂

A mortuary hall. One example is the rear part of the *Kaisanzou 開山堂 at Eihouji 永保寺 (1352) in Gifu prefecture. It is 1-bay square. Originally, the remains of the founder of a temple and his family or other relatives were enshrined in this hall. Nowadays it is a place for ordinary people's remains to be stored.
