sekimori-ishi 関守石

Lit. barrier-keeper stone. A stone placed atop a stepping stone *tobi-ishi 飛石, in a garden to indicate a route that should not be taken. Usually the stone is tied with bracken rope or palm-hemp rope to indicate its special status.
