The finishing coat on a wall that consists of iron rust mixed with clay or plaster. Originally, old nails were boiled, and the resulting liquid was mixed with the clay or plaster. Now, iron filings are used. Folk tales have it that soy sauce was sometimes added to the rust or filings to produce a rich dark brown.
