renji koushido 連子格子戸
CATEGORY: architecture / general terms

Also called tatekoushido 堅格子戸.
A standard type of vertically latticed door about two to three times as wide as the lattice itself. The vertical lattice is secured by widely spaced horizontal lattice placed on the inner side of the vertical laths yokorennji 横連子. Both the vertical and horizontal laths are inserted into the door frame. The number of vertical and horizontal lattice strips varies, and different effects can be achieved by different arrangement; thus, each of the arrangements has a different name. This type of latticed door appears on some temple structures and is commonly found on wooden residences. These with horizontal laths only are called yokokoushido 横格子戸.
