A roofed corridor or passageway that connects one structure to another. It may also encompass an open area. There are several kinds of rou named according to function, construction and style: *kairou 回廊 (a single or double passageway); *horou 歩廊 (a corridor); sukirou 透廊 (a passageway open on both sides); watarou 渡廊 (a connection corridor), *chuumonrou 中門廊 (a middle gate corridor); *hashirou 橋廊 (a bridge causeway); and *youkurou 翼廊 (wing corridors). This last type extends out from the *Chuudou 中堂 at Byoudouin *Hououdou 平等院鳳凰堂 (1053) in Kyoto.
