Ch: Lin Lingsu. A Daoist immortal in the service of the Northern Song Emperor Huizong (Jp: Kisou ‹J@, r. 1101-25). A staunch proponent of Daoism and detractor of Buddhism, Lin avidly studied Daoist magic. One day at a contest between magicians, Lin surprised his competitors by blowing water out of his mouth which then vaporized into five colored clouds bearing a lion, a golden dragon, and three cranes. In painting Lin is usually represented performing this feat, but he is also shown as a long-haired and bearded man riding the mythical Chinese animal *kirin κi—Ω. The image of Lin blowing the animal-bearing clouds is parodied in *ukiyo-e •‚’ŠG (see *mitate-e Œ©—§ŠG), which depict a courtesan spewing forth a similar vapor. One notable print of this type is by Okumura Masanobu ‰œ‘ΊM (1686-1764).
