Ch: Lin Hejing (967-1028). A noted poet, calligrapher and scholar of the Northern Song dynasty. Rin Nasei's real name was Lin Bu (Jp: Rin Po —Ρη™), while his posthumous name was Hejing. He was raised in Qiantang ‘K“„ but is associated with his hermitage on Mt. Gu ŒΗ near the West Lake *Seiko ΌŒΞ. Lin Hejing is said to have domesticated two cranes, a story illustrated in two painting types called petting the cranes bukaku-zu •’ߐ} and tame cranes junkaku-zu “ι’ߐ}. Lin was also known for his fondness for plum blossoms, and he is included in the painting theme called Four Favorites *Shiai Žlˆ€. Lin is typically shown as the ideal hermit, wandering through a landscape in search of his beloved plum blossoms accompanied by a crane and servant. Paintings of Lin Hejing can be traced to the Southern Song period and are found in Japan from the Muromachi period (15c). Representative works include a hanging scroll attributed to Shoubun Žό•Ά (mid-15c, Kyoto National Museum) and screens *fusuma-e ‰¦ŠG by Kanou Sansetsu Žλ–μŽRα (1589/90-1651, Daihouonji ‘ε•ρ‰ΆŽ›, Kyoto) and Kanou Tan'yuu Žλ–μ’T—H (1602-74, Shuuon'an V‰ΆˆΑ, Kyoto).
