rantsugi　乱継

Lit. random joints. Various types of architectural joints that can be either dovetail *aritsugi 蟻継 for simple work, or gooseneck *kamatsugi 鎌継, for more complex construction. These joints *tsugite 継手, are placed with no intention of creating uniformity. The position of these joints varies from building to building. For example, joints used on purlins, *keta 桁, and on a ridge pole *munagi 棟木, are scattered in zigzag fashion. This method increases the strength of the connected members.
