oto
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

Also otogozen 乙御前. A mask of a young woman, used in kyougen 狂言 plays. Oto has a fat, dimpled face with an innocent cheerful expression but ugly features. She has round, bulging cheeks and small features, giving a friendly, comic effect. Oto appears in many plays including “son-in-law comedies”, like The Capricious Magic Fish Hook ( TSURIBARI 釣針), where a servant tries to run away from the hideous girl he has fished up as a bride.
