Also pronounced oudan, ouni. A deep yellow colour, produced by dyeing yellow gardenia *kuchinashi 支子 with red safflower *beni 紅. Outan is the designated colour for the robes of a crown prince, and is one of seven colours called kinjiki 禁色 (forbidden colours), traditionally reserved for the imperial family and nobility.
