obari 男梁

Also called outsubari おうつ梁; sometimes called *udegi 腕木. A term used for the larger, upper member at each end at right angles to the lintel *magusa まぐさ, in many gates, for example ; *munamon 棟門, *yakuimon 薬医門, *hirakaramon 平唐門, and *shikyakumon 四脚門. It supports purlines *keta 桁 at each end. The transverse beam below the obari is called *mebari 女梁 or *hijiki 肘木. It functions as a bracket arm, and is usually shaped like one.
