nishi-no-maru 西の丸
KEY WORD : architecture / castles

A castle compound to the west of the main compound *honmaru 本丸. In a early modern castle complex, the main compound, the second compound *ni-no-maru 二の丸 and third compound san-no-maru 三の丸 were aligned either concentrically or on an axis. When another important compound was placed to the west of the main compound, it was called the nishi-no-maru, the "western compound".
