narihira sodegaki 業平袖垣
KEY WORD : architecture / gardens

Lit. Narihira sleeve fence. A common type of rustic see-though sleeve fence, sukashi sodegaki 透袖垣. The frame, made of bamboo wrapped in wisteria vines or bushclover, is curved at the outer top corner. The same materials are woven into a lozenge-shaped lattice that fills the interior space. Typically these fences are quite small because the elastic materials tend to sag when extended more than one meter across. This fence is also called the Korean sleeve fence, kourai sodegaki 高麗袖垣.
