naka-no-to 中の戸

1 A generic term for a door connecting two areas of a structure.

2 A door in the northern peripheral area *hisashi 廂 of the Imperial Palace building, Seiryouden 清涼殿, located between the first and second eastern sections.

3 A veranda entrance into the formal reception room *zashiki 座敷, in vernacular dwellings in Kouchi prefecture or Tochigi prefecture, used in place of the usual entrance hall. It functioned as the entrance for priests and special guests on ceremonial occasions, such as weddings, funerals or memorial services. In the Kinki 近畿 area it is called de-no-guchi 出の口.
