mokume 木目

Sometimes written 杢目. Also called mokuri 木理 or kime 肌目. The wood grain exposed when a log is cut lengthwise. The patterns vary according to the species of the tree. The grain includes the growth rings, the fibrous parts and trachea, i.e., the ducts composed of a series of dead cells that conveyed water through the living tree.
